8th Grade Band

The 8th grade band is directed by Mr. Josh Werner.  Mr. Werner is originally from Milwaukee, but now resides in Mukwonago.  He attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and earned his bachelors degree in Music Education in 2000.  He enjoys teaching his students about his passion for music and although he realizes that not all students may go into music in college, he hopes that his students will have a lifelong partnership and appreciation for music and what it can bring to our lives.

Mr. Werner is has played trumpet since 1985 and continues to perform with the 132nd Army National Guard Band based in Madison, WI.  In addition, he is currently working to earn his Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from Cardinal Stritch University.  Mr. Werner enjoys learning and teaching his students about the benefits of technology and how they can be applied in music.  See his 8th grade band blog here.

Course Description

Band 8 is a continuation of 7th grade band. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and alternate Fridays for the entire year. The curriculum uses the same framework as 7th grade band but on a more advanced level. Required performances include a winter concert, local and regional solo/ensemble, and a spring concert.

Group lessons will be scheduled weekly. Lessons will be scheduled during regular classes but times will be rotated to minimize the extent that any class is missed. All band members are expected to attend lessons and to practice regularly outside of class.

Students will also learn basic music theory and will have some rhythm assignments that will improve their overall sight reading ability and overall knowledge of music. Band members are required to purchase a band method book as required by the instructor. Percussionists are required to have a bell set and mallets. The eighth grade band traditionally takes a day long trip in spring.

All band students using school-owned instruments will be assessed a $60.00 user fee. In addition, all percussionists will be assessed a $60.00 user fee to help offset the cost of maintenance of the percussion instruments.
